The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has come under fire lately for its handling of the wild mustangs on its land. BLM Corruption has been an advocate of the mustang along with Ginger Kathrens both calling for the stop of the BLM’s movement and confinement practices which is killing some of the Mustangs.

One of the big concerns for BLM is overpopulation. Well a billionaire’s wife has come to the rescue and has purchased a 14,000 acre ranch to house the  mustangs. For advocates of the mustang this should be good news as it is a step in the right direction for removing control of the horses from the BLM and into a true sanctuary.

Pickens buys NV ranch for wild horse sanctuary | Bryan/College

(AP) — Madeleine Pickens, the wife of Texas billionaire T. Boone Pickens, has bought a sprawling Nevada ranch to serve as a wild horse sanctuary that would keep mustangs on the range instead of in government-funded holding facilities. …

    Daniel, if a healthy balance of wildlife is to be maintained on the ranch Pickens bought it has very little room for more horses. One of the reasons it sold is because the existing horse population left no feed for cattle. Until a solution to excess horse numbers on public land can be found this sanctuary will be no more assistance to wild horses than a bird cage is to pigeon over population.

    Three generations of ranchers (that I know) have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in grazing fees on this pasture. Ms. Pickens now wants to reverse that economicly sound program and have overburdoned taxpayers to pay half a million a year to harbor her feral pets? No!

    Ray, thank you for your input. the only information I have of her project is what was reported in the news. It sounds like a good idea on the surface. The details you are stating here would give me pause to thinking it is an ideal situation. The one question I have to your statement though is how is Ms. Pickens causing taxpayers to pay half a million a year? I thought it was a private ranch?

    The one thing I do know is that there is a big debate and a possible skewing of the numbers of wild horses that are on public land and that ranchers would like to use the land for other purposes. Sounds like a huge turf war to me with the Mustangs caught in the middle. I don’t know enough about the exact situation since I do not live in the area. It is interesting to get information and opinions from both sides of the situation though.

    Daniel, thank you for your responce. Ms. Picken’s proposal requests the BLM pay the sanctuary 500.00 per head per year to hold these animals. There is only a couple thousand acres of private land on this ranch, the remaining 12,000 acres are public.

    I am a drilling contractor and have kept the water wells up and running on the place for the past 30 some years. The ranch is desert and mountains with little live water, the feed surrounding these springs is overgrazed. Snow drives wildlife off the mountains into the sparse valleys during the winter.

    Regardless, a sanctuary will in no way inhibit breeding outside of the area nor inhibits the creation of excess horses elsewhere. In few years (if not now) Ms. Picken’s ranch will be fully stocked and the BLM holding facitities will again be full. We are slapping an expensive feel good bandade on a fast growing tumor.

    Hello Ray;

    I justed wanted to state that drilling wells in this area is risky and expensive. We just completed a domestic well at $50,000 and that doesn’t include the power to pump the water. I also know that the snow and harsh winter weather may prevent the horses from feeding. Most of the cattle in the area have winter habitats with warm water to prevent the need from chopping ice for animals to drink water.

    It may be a good idea for Madeleine to consult with locals such as Ray (a noted expert); local ranchers and others. Often in this part of the country, many need friends for survival.

    Regards,

    Victoria

    You should check out this new web-based animal reality show called Animal Movers. It is about a pet transportation company that moves animals all around the world. They move many different types of animals. The first episode was about moving Rhodesian Ridgebacks to Hawaii. It was very interesting and family friendly. You can find it at http://www.animalmovers.tv
