A New Clinic

The University of Minnesota’s Leatherdale Equine Center is a brand new clinic – very high tech with a lot of cool new toys. These new toys include a water treadmill for horses and a gait analysis system that helps in the diagnosis of lameness. It includes pressure plates and high speed digital cameras to help measure the amount of pressure a hoof has while it is landing and the angles of the joints of the landing and uprising leg. Very cool!

Check out the new center here —> University of Minnesota’s Leatherdale Equine Center

Speaking of new clinics I also need to mention that I have started working at a new clinic myself. Sorry small animal only – I have begun working at Oak Hill Animal Clinic in Crown Point, IN. I am there on Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Saturdays. So if you have a dog or cat in need of my services please do not hesitate to call and schedule an appointment at  219.663.7515

Equine Owner, Breeder & Caretaker CE Series

The Ohio State University has a series called the Equine Owner, Breeder & Caretaker CE Series. In their own words -

The Equine Owner, Breeder and Caretaker Continuing Education Series is designed to provide timely and practical updates on equine healthcare topics from a diverse group of equine veterinarians with a broad expertise and experience in various aspects of horse health, well-being and performance.

What I want to tell you is that if you are a horse owner you really need to check out the next in this series. It is titled – Equine ER – Equine Veterinary Emergencies. It will cover topics such as how to be prepared for an emergency, and what to do in case your horse has a medical emergency, such as a cut, trouble walking or colic.

Again if you have a horse and you are available to go to Ohio State University on April 29th then you really need to go to this event. For more information check out their website at http://www.vet.osu.edu/1102.htm

Saddle Fitters

OK it is that time of year just before show season begins and just before you start gearing up to really put in some heavy training. It’s saddle fitting season. You NEED to have your saddle checked out, refitted, repaired and reflocked. This should be done a minimum of once a year and for you more intense riders every 6 months.

So now the question is who would you have do this service for you?  Not all saddle fitters are created equal. You need to ask for credentials! Most saddle fitting courses are only 2 weeks long, which is sadly lacking in the amount of knowledge to truly do a good job of fitting saddles to your horse.  You need to find a true Certified Master Saddler.

A Certified Master Saddler has gone through extensive training and apprenticeship such that can be found at the Society of Master Saddlers in England. With this type of training and quality you can be assured that your saddle is being fitted correctly to your horse.
